The AHS is an international Sangha with its base at The Hermitage in North Wales with other local groups throughout the UK. The Sangha was founded by Lama Shenpen Hookham who is a skilled translator of Tibetan and has over 50 years experience of the Mahamudra/Dzogchen traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
AHS Brighton is led by Sherab, a senior student of Lama Shenpen and teacher within the Awakened Heart Sangha.
The AHS is part of an incredible lineage of teachers from the Kagyu and Nyingma schools, which includes Lama Shenpen’s main teacher Khenpo Rinpoche; Rigdzin Shikpo; Trungpa Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche, to name a few.
Lama Shenpen was ordained as a nun in India in the 1970s by H.H the 16th Karmapa who also instructed her to return to the West and teach. On the advice of the teacher of all her teachers, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, she moved to North Wales and set up The Hermitage retreat centre and built an Enlightenment Stupa in the grounds. You can find out more about Lama Shenpen and the lineage HERE.
Lama Shenpen has devised a unique distance learning course in Buddhist meditation, reflection and insight, tailored especially for Westerners called Living the Awakened Heart Training. It’s an ongoing, comprehensive and structured training in Buddhist meditation, reflection and insight, offered on a donation basis and studied at your own pace.
Members of the sangha have a clear path of study and practise, with the opportunity for a lifetime of practice, utilising distance learning, one to one mentoring, online courses, meditation and teaching days, as well as longer retreat opportunities at The Hermitage.
Local groups such as ours in Brighton support local AHS members as well as anyone interested in learning more about our Formless Meditation practise and Tibetan Buddhism as taught within the Living the Awakened Heart Training.
